Research

2) Write an analysis of this BFI Film Festival programme front cover. How many of the 12 key conventions of magazine covers can you see? In what way does this print product differ from a traditional magazine cover? How have the designers made this programme visually interesting?

In the image, I can see a bit of key conventions of magazine covers such as;
  • The Masthead - this is the main title of the magazine which is "BFI London Film Festival" which is written in huge blocks
  • Pugs - this is the 3 words in the circles on the top right of the book which is placed there to seek attention. It is like a logo to make it appealing to the consumers.
  • Box-out - this is the title that is coloured in variety of different colours which is used to appeal to consumers.
Moreover, this print advert differs from a traditional magazine cover because it doesn't have many key conventions of a magazine. Mainly, in magazines, there would be social media links and etc but in this print advert, it's more dull and not interacting. But however, in a way, it is interesting and versatile. The way the designers made this print advert visually interesting is that the use of different colours on the big block of words on the title is what attracts many consumers. Also, with it's lack of use of key conventions of a magazine, it makes it versatile and it's interesting with the layout of it.

3) Find at least 5 arts centre or cinema programmes/brochures aimed at a similar target audience to your project (art house cinema). For each one, pick out one design idea that you could use in your own print work.

1) This Arts magazine design seems very interesting as it as many texts layed out on it. Also, with the images, there are 2 certainly with the main image of the art work and also, we see another small picture which shows individuals with the amazing shot. Moreover, with the texts, there are so many texts layed out everywhere on the Arts magazine cover which every consumers are going to be appealed by with the bubble writings and different use of colours. Lastly, with the design idea that I find very interesting and could use for my print work is the use of the bubble writings and the use of different colours to not make it dull but make it more eye-catching.

2) With this magazine design, it looks more simple and "high class" with the sketchy and professional look. The fonts of the texts look more professional and neat as well. Moreover, with the design that I found very attractive was the way the texts are layed out. Most of them are layed out on one side which I think I may do for my print work.

3) This Arts magazine is a very appealing and intriguing magazine due to its layout of the texts as well as the edited pictures.  The design in this magazine cover that appeals to me the most is the way tets are layed out with the size and the style. The main title is very significantly huge compared to the other irrelevant texts which is to show that the title is the main focus as well as the main image.

4) This is another arts magazine front cover which shoes great use of colours, texts and images to make the magazine cover look amazing. Firstly, it includes some of the key conventions of a magazine front cover which is something that is positive. Also, it may not be a similar target audience to our film but the designs of this magazine front cover is really appealing. The use of different colours makes he magazine cover look very colourful and glamorous which brings in the consumers. Also, the use of more than 1 pictures of individuals is a great combination for the consumers to relate with

5) This last magazine cover that I will analyse is also a Arts magazine. The appealing design of this magazine is that it looks more professional and neat. Also, it has some of the conventions of what a magazine cover should have. For example, it has the title of the magazine which is the second main focus for the consumers to look at. Also, there is a central image which is of a little girl which appeals to some consumers as there is only one invidividual and some consumers can relate with how she looks or anything else. This may be targeted at a similar audience to ours as there is a little girl as a central image which we also have. Also, she doesn't seem that satsfied which our lead character will also not look.

4) Find at least 5 contents pages from arts programmes or magazines. How are contents pages designed? How do they use a combination of text and images to create an effective design?

 1) The first content page I want to analyse is the arts magazine content page which looks quite intriguing due to the amount of texts and images on it. Also, with how the layout is. Firstly, the content involves page and topic names which appeals to the consumers as the whole part of the content page is to let consumers know where is in what page. Also, with the images, it has many images that are in the magazine which is shown to give the consumers an insight of what the magazine could be about. Moreover, with the colour schemes, there seems to be only black and white without the images which is appealing because it is a consistent use of the two colours.

 2) The second magazine I would like to analyse is the Mendocino Arts magazine contents page. With this contents page, it is quite unique and versatile. Firstly, with the page numbers, it has the topic names beside it to let the consumers know where it where. Also, with the colour scheme, it doesn;t have many colours including the images which is quite dull but however, it makes the contents page look consistent and neat.

 3) The third content page that I would like to analyse is the Glamour Magazine content page. This content page in particular is designed to appeal to many consumers. With the colourful Masthead on the top, it immediately attracts consumers once they see the content page. Also, it has a central image which they immediately are appealed by. Lastly, with the contents, it has the page numbers in red colour and the names in black which makes it easier for the consumers to understand where is what page. Essentially, the use of different fonts of the title and the colours of the texts help to create an appealing design as well as the image of the attractive woman that many consumers will be attracted by.

3) The fourth content page that I have chosen to talk about is a magazine contents page. The design of this content page is somewhat appealing due to the colours, font types and images that are set on this content page. With the tet "Contents", it is written in big blocks of letters separately and the colour of it is white which makes it appealing to the consumers immediately due to the size of it. Also, the colour white is a stand out to the colour of the background. Also, with the features and contents, it is written in tiny letters and different fonts to make the other surroundings more significant and appealing to the consumers. Also, the fact that the features are written in different font type, it is trying to make the content page look more better. Moreover, the image of the attractive model is a central image of the content page which is there to attract many that are into fashion or anyone else because this magazine is mainly about fashion

4) The fifth content page I have chosen to analyse is the magazine content page. As clearly shown on the image, that the content page is white background and the front cover of the Magazine is where many images are. This shows the complete difference of the two. With the contents page, it certainly includes more text as it is a page where every information's are layed out. Moreover, with the tets, it is clearly seen that the font of the main title "Fashion" is a bold, heavy one which is the main appealing setting on the content page. With the different colours of the texts, it is certainly appealing to the consumers.
